Visa
Regarding Spanish and European regulations, a visa is a document that is inserted in the passport of the foreign person who wishes to come to Spain or the Schengen area, issued by the Spanish Consulate in the country where the applicant resides, provided that the procedure has been favorable.
The visa may allow entry to Spain for a specific period.
There are four types of visa to enter Spanish territory.
- There are study visas that allow you to stay in Spain for periods of up to 180 days.
- There is also the tourist visa or the short-term visa.
- The type A transit visa
- The long-term visa or type D.
- The visa is a very feasible option if you want to reside in Spain for a period understood as long-term, which is usually one year.

Residence
Residency is the legal status granted to those people who are willing to remain in our country for a certain time and depending on their characteristics, they can either opt for residence or residence and work. If you apply for a job, the working conditions are comparable to those of Spanish citizens.

Stays
A foreigner who is not the holder of a residence permit and is authorized to remain in Spain for an uninterrupted period or sum of successive periods whose total duration does not exceed ninety days per semester from the date of the first entry, without prejudice to the fact that this is extended for the admission process for the purposes of studies, student mobility, non-work internships or volunteer services.
If it is a stay for transit purposes, the duration of the authorized stay will correspond to the time necessary to carry out the transit.
The stay can be obtained through a visa or authorization.

Residence for Family Members of Spanish Citizens
If the applicant is a family member of a Spanish citizen and does not hold the nationality of an EU/EEA/Swiss country, they may apply for a specific residence permit allowing them to join, accompany, or live with their relative in Spain.
Under the new Regulation (Royal Decree 1155/2024), a distinct legal status is established for foreign family members of Spanish citizens, with a procedure that differs from the general immigration regime (régimen general de extranjería).
This is an initial 5-year residence permit, which allows the holder to:
- Reside in Spain, or
- Reside and work, depending on the specific case.
What does this residence permit provide?
- Legal residence in Spain
- The possibility to reside with their Spanish family member
- Stability to develop their life project in the country
- In many cases, access to the labour market
This residence authorisation covers spouses or partners, children, ascendants, parents of Spanish minors, dependent relatives, and other situations contemplated under the current legal framework.
EU/EEA Citizens
Citizens of a member state of the E.U. or of another State party to the EEA Agreement. who are going to reside in Spain for a period of more than three months, are obliged to personally request before the Foreigners’ Office of the province where they intend to stay or establish their residence or, failing that, before the corresponding Police Station, their registration in the Central Registry of Foreigners.

- Community resident certificates.
Provisional NIE application

Foreigners who interact with Spain due to their economic, professional or social interests must request the assignment of the Foreigner Identity Number to the General Directorate of the Police.
It can be done through the following ways:
- By specific power.
- Through the Consulate.
- Physically in the offices enabled for this purpose.
